YOUR SATURDAY Q&A
Psst! We’re helping you tackle the big job of organizing your garage!

QUESTION
Our garage has become the family dumping ground! My hope is that if I organize the space, I might actually be able to find things when I need them.

What organizing solutions are on the market and where can I buy them?

ANSWER
I’m one of those organizing junkies who is always in search of the latest solution to make my life less chaotic. Sheds and garages present the ultimate challenge as function is high and space is scant.

The trick is to use vertical space wisely to create easy access to everyday items and waterproof storage for seasonal stowaways.

3 EASY WAYS TO GET ORGANIZED =
PEG IT, MOUNT IT, STACK IT

1. PEG IT
Peg boards are a tool collector’s best friend. They maximize vertical space, are easy to install and keep everyday items within arms reach.

Creating this setup is a weekend project that requires a little planning and effort however once its in place, you won’t ever have to search for a screwdriver again.

Where to buy: www.homedepot.com
How to install: Home depot offers a step-by-step tutorial here.

use a wooden frame with metal stays on the back--and it should be a deep frame. insert the painted pegboard and clip down to secure. attach d-rings to the back of the frame. use hook stabilizers on the front of the pegboard to keep things from wobbling.

2. MOUNT IT
Ceiling and wall-mounted hooks and racks are perfect for storing bikes, fold-up strollers, lawn tools and ladders. Available in a variety of heft and weights, here are my favourites:

TOOLS: Lee Valley ‘Gripit’ Tool Holders
BIKES: MEC ‘Swagman’ Fold It Bike Hanger
LADDERS: Home Depot ‘Little Giant’ RacK
STROLLERS: ‘BuggUp’ Stroller System

BONUS TIP: To get started, group like-items together e.g. gardening, sporting and painting and then designate an area for each grouping.

3. STACK IT
Shelving, whether built-in or store bought provides the best home for stackable storage bins and oversized equipment and tools.

Storing household items in labeled bins will encourage your family members to put items away after use (quite the feat)!

BONUS TIP: Commercial and heavy duty storage racks are worth the investment as they will hold their shape and wear well over time.
