About The Neighbourhood
In 1819, the Port Whitby Harbour area was part of a land grant awarded to John Scadding, right hand man to the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada, John Graves Simcoe. A busy commercial port in the 1840s, the harbour fell victim to depleted lumber resources and punishing U.S tariffs on Canadian imports. The harbour now fulfills a recreational role, hosting a marina and a yacht club.
Located at the south end of Whitby overlooking Lake Ontario, Port Whitby Harbour is bookended to the east and west by parkland and conservation areas. Access to the 401 makes commuting a snap.
Port Whitby real estate consists of a blend of newer townhomes and boutique condominiums on the west side of the neighbourhood and smaller starter homes on the east side.
SmartCentres Whitby Shores, located at Gordon St and Victoria St W, offers a supermarket, an LCBO, a coffee shop, and a neighbourhood pub. Nearby are the Iroquois Park Sports Complex, Whitby Station Gallery and the Whitby Go station.
Families and professionals are increasingly drawn to Port Whitby Harbour for its affordable housing stock, services, and proximity to the lake.
