The Vibe

The City of Vaughan is infused with the excitement of a diverse, multicultural population, yet anchored by a wonderful mix of historic hamlets that create the perfect balance of thriving, growing city with pockets of quiet country charm. Stunning properties, exciting attractions, and a boost of youthful spirit from students attending nearby York University culminate into an attractive community offering something for people of all ages and backgrounds.

The Story

Vaughan is located in the traditional territory of the Huron-Wendat and the Haudenosaunee people. These people played a critical role in assisting the settlement of the first Europeans of the area who were mostly German Pennsylvanians and people of French and English descent.

The area grew from roughly 50 in 1814 to 4,300 by 1840, incorporating into a township in 1850. Hamlets included Thornhill and Kleinburg and by the end of World War II the area attracted many immigrants fleeing from war torn Europe. In 1960 Italians, Jews and Eastern Europeans added to the area’s population growth, and the town merged with Woodbridge to form the Town of Vaughan in 1971. In 1991, it became a city consisting of Concord, Kleinburg, Maple, Thornhill, and Woodbridge with the original families’ descendants contributing to the growing population, thriving industry, and booming community the City of Vaughan has become.

Today’s diverse housing runs the gamut from historic homes to rural farmhouses and new build single family, semi-detached and townhouses to condos. You’ll also find plenty of mid-century, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s homes boasting new renovations courtesy of the many families seeking life in areas such as Woodbridge and Thornhill.

Kleinburg has become very prosperous with a jaw dropping assortment of sprawling mansions of several thousand square feet and impressive yard sizes complete with elegant pools, exceptional landscaping, and multi-vehicle garages.

Maple is also starting to experience growth as a more affordable area in Vaughan where a growing number of low-rise condos are popping up. Older neighborhoods of Maple offer plenty of charm with shady streets dotted with mature trees and well-kept homes.

The Convenience

Vaughan’s impressive transportation system gives Toronto a run for its money, something rarely experienced in a smaller city. Less than an hour away from Toronto, Vaughan continues to offer an easy drive thanks to the 407, 404 and 401, as well as its reliable Viva transit. The light rapid transit lines and buses connect to the TTC at the new Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Station on line 1.

It makes total sense that you’ll find everything you need in Vaughan considering it’s the sixth richest city in Canada with a booming population of over 300,000. It offers not only all the conveniences of shopping, dining, and entertainment, but also job opportunities thanks to low commercial and industrial taxes which attract businesses to the city.

From high scale shopping at Vaughan Mills to a kiddy paradise close to Canada’s Wonderland and lovely parkland and community centers and the impressive McMichael Gallery to tons of festivals and cultural events, it’s not surprising that Vaughan continues to attract up and coming couples, singles, and young families alike.

The Residents

Vaughan is home to well-off young successful professionals, and wealthy families looking for larger homes and properties outside of Toronto. There’s also a population of students attending nearby York University living in the area. Although Vaughan is home to many cultures, there is a large Italian population as well as many families of Jewish and Russian descent. Because of the convenience and ample supply of varied pricing in housing, there’s a wonderfully diverse population that includes Chinese, Jamaican, Indian, Vietnamese, and Spanish backgrounds.

The Best Part

Whether lunching in a pretty little restaurant or café or shopping the boutiques, the City of Vaughan’s hamlets offer beautifully preserved historic main streets that make living here feel exclusive. The ample country charm found in these upscale, heritage hamlets make life in Vaughan a little less urban sprawl-ish and a lot more life is sweet.
